I have a 99 Subaru Legacy Outback with an EJ25 DOHC.
I had a head gasket fail but the engine was still running beautifully so I decided to replace the head gaskets.
I sent the heads away for machining, reinstalled and when I started it up I got a brutally loud knocking noise. My ears tell me it’s coming from the passenger side on the front of the engine. The car ran smooth but loud.
Timing marks are all lined up, tensioner seems to be firm…
What could I have done wrong?
While rotating the engine by hand to ensure timing was true I did notice a small snag right around TDC that I thought might have had something to do with compression but now I’m unsure.
Thanks for any advice!
I have a video of the vehicle running but can’t figure out how to attach it?
