Keyless Entry Programming Button on 98 Outback

I recently bought a 98 outback limited. I didn't receive any keyless entry units with the car, but I've looked under the dash and I have the subaru keyless entry control unit. I've read on this board and I've seen the instructions on how to program new remotes, but here's my question. I have looked everywhere for the programming button and have not found it. It seems that this was a dealer install and they didn't put the button where it's supposed to go. So ... could someone look at their outback for me and trace the wire that goes to the programming button. I want to know what color the wire is and where it hooks up so I can go in reverse and try to find where they have stuck the button. Thanks

The button on mine was in the wring loom near the control unit. By the way I have two remotes, are you looking to buy some?

First question, the flashing diode or non existent is it a push button type, and it starts to double flash after pushing it. (code alarm/ Subaru/ rectangle remote) or is it a simple light, (alpine/Subaru/Ovoid remote) It could also be a aftermarket.

It should be a code alarm, for that year, 99 was Alpine. The programming button is a mushroom cap with a center button. You put the key in the on position and hold the button down until the locks cycle three times. while holding the programming button, press the lock button on each of the remotes you want programmed. Good Luck

Thanks for all the info. It is a code alarm version, the problem is that I cannot find the programming button, it is not in the dash beside the steering column as talked about in other threads. I have looked everywhere under the dash and not found it. I want to try to trace it from the subaru keyless entry control unit. Thanks again for the reply

Did the 2001 OBW have a proramming button. installed the factory add-on security system and don't recall any button?

On my 97 OBW, the button is just (<1cm) below the hood release lever. From your description it is not clear whether you've looked there.

Factory System programming involved unlocking the doors, locking the doors, closing the drivers door, turning the ignition 10 times within 15 seconds, until you hear a honk. then you open the drivers door and close the door pressing the big button on the remote in between you will hear a double honk, you must redo all remotes. when you pull the ignition key you will hear three honks.

Done.

I finally found the programming button. It was wrapped up with the other wires and tucked back under the dash. The button has 2 small brown wires that run to it. Thanks to everyone who replied back.

I'm glad that you finally located the programming button. Don't forget, this button can be depressed (if your remote battery goes out, or you lose it) for the purpose of starting your car (with the alarm blaring)...hth...jim "Mike Morris" wrote:
