Hello all, new to the group and excited to learn from my fellow Subaru enthusiasts.
Long story short, our son's 1st car of 2 years '08 Legacy (153K) is giving trouble, and we are at a crossroads: to fix or sell!
Car starts but does not run without LOUD knocking and pinging sounds. The dealership wants possibly up to $15K to replace the engine which seems a bit outrageous!
Great little car - newly replaced catalytic converter and battery. Clean inside and out with minimal issues - aside from the engine. Any advice on where to begin is greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Yes that sounds extremely expensive, you can buy a good used car for that. I recommend getting a second opinion/ quote from a other reputable Subaru shop (not dealer). Used engines can be found for under $2k.

Thanks Pro_leonk,
she really is an amazing car, issues aside, and would HATE to see her go.
Will continue troubleshooting and you're right...that's 1-2 used cars! LOL
