Does anyone actually *know* why Subaru used a Bakelite-like material for the inlet camshaft pulleys on various Imprezas? Cost really can't be a factor so I'm wondering if the material choice has something to do with e.g. minimising harmonic stresses on the belt??

If there are aftermarket/performance alternatives, it may be worth reading the description for those, as they might highlight what they "fix."

My guess would be weight and cost saving.
Our cars are being designed and created more by ignorant gubberment flunkies and idiotic MBA nitwits as time goes on.

I don't believe any of this:
As any product designer knows, a "wet" process such as moulding phenolic is a real PITA & far less preferable than NMC processes milling say aluminium. I contend that the real reason lies with minimising harmonic vibrations & if you check the surface material of the V-belt drive (crankshaft pulley), I think you'll find a similar material.
Anyone know better please?
