How good is the oil pressure gauge ?

O

odyssey

I own a '91 loyale with 84k miles. I was just wondering when I let it idle
for four or five min. (when warm ) the oil pressure guage shows 0 , is there
eough oilpressure to run , so as it'll be safe ? Is the gauge really
accurate or is it telling you that it is in safe mode.. It still running
fine when this happens. I just would like to know if will hurt anything ?
Otherwise it has 45 to 47pounds when it starts.... What's your thought's on
this situation.

Good newsgroup I read it often...Thanks ..

I suppose there is no problem if the oil pressure warning light is not on.
Check if this light its not burnt.

Hi,

Don't know HOW accurate the gauge really is, but if you have an original
owners' manual for the car, I believe you'll find somewhere in there
that a "0" reading at idle when hot is fine (at least that's what they
say in the 1990 version!) My '90 Loyale's been that way forever, and has
clocked 342k miles so far. Running pressure is more important: ~30-45
lbs on the gauge, depending on rpm, oil viscosity, and overall heat
situation (ambient temps, running temps, etc) seems to be "normal"
according to all the books I've seen. Mine runs around 40 lbs at about
3250--common freeway speed--using 15W-40 Delo 400 fully warmed up, a bit
lower with other brands and viscosities. Sometimes, but not always, it's
higher if it's cold outside.

HTH,

Rick
