horn connector - '02 legacy

T

tom klein

my '02 legacy changed its tune recently (the "chirp" when i lock/unlock
it got weak and higher pitched). at first i thought it was a battery
problem, since i've had a bad battery and a loose battery cable before.
but the car started perfectly well, so i started poking around under
the hood.

it turns out that the problem is one of the two horns: the wire broke
off at the connector. not a big deal, except the brass insert is stuck
inside and i don't know how to release it. (the connector is 6mm x
10mm x 25 mm, plus catch, and says "amp" and "23" on the outside.)

would anyone have advice on the best way to repair it? (driving around
with a wimpy horn wouldn't be my first choice.) if i can't buy a
replacement connector, or figure out how to pull out the brass, i could
either solder a piece of wire to the old connector (with brute force
and plenty of excess solder), then splice it to the wire, or solder a
wire directly onto the terminal at the horn. not elegant, but the
car's almost 10 years old, and is not in "collectible" condition.

suggestions?

A pair of pliers and a small screwdriver (flat head). Grab the insert with
the pliers. There should be a lock mechanism on the connector that either
needs to be pushed in or pulled out to release the insert.

Is this a connector in the middle of a harness?(wires on both sides)
If so, get scotchloks (w'ever) from the auto parts store and splice
the wires together.
