Hissing AC

G

Greg R.

I have a '97 Subaru Impreza with aout 110,000 miles on it. Just tonight
the AC started hissing from the glovebox as soon as I turn it on. I had
this same issue about 4 years ago and it turned out the seal that
connects the evaporator to the system was cracked. It was replaced and
averything seemed okay, until tonight. Now it's winter here and the AC
hasn't been used in several months. I turned it on to quickly clear
some fog from the windsheild. Am I looking at another AC repair, or
does this just need a recharge? I really only plan on having the car a
couple more years tops... what does this noise mean? Prior to this the
car sat for over a week in VERY cold weather without being driven...
(New England). Any advice? Thanks in advance...

Before you panic, turn the blower up all the
way for a few seconds and see if it clears a
leaf out of the fan.

I was hoping that would be the case..... But it's not something in the
fan, tried running it on high for awhile. It definately an air noise
from the glovebox. The best I can do to describe the noice it if you
had a can on compressed air and you were releasing it. I've read this
could mean I need a recharge, of course if I'm low that means I have a
leak. What is a better place to have it looked at, the dealer or an AC
specialist (if they exist). Thanks in advance...

I have a similar hiss, though I call it more of a sigh, but for me
it's when the heat is on. I get it when the variable temp dial is at
around 2 o'clock.

Had it to the dealers (for an oil change and maintenance stuff) and
while they acknowledge the issue - they checked everything they could
short of pulling the dash and couldn't find the problem.... Said if I
wanted to pursue that I'd have to schedule for a loaner while they
yanked the dash and kept looking.

Since I seem to have one of the dash's that don't have interesting
rattles, etc. I've decided to leave it be for the moment. It's
somewhat annoying, but not anything critical.

BTW - this is an '02 WRX Wagon.

Mine is quite loud and only when the AC is on. I can easily hear it
over the radio. I'm planning on waiting until the spring (and warmer
weather) to get it checked. The car is a '97 with over 110k miles, so
if it is a leak, doubt I'll be putting the money into it. Living in New
England AC is a bonus, not a necessity......
