I just brought mine home. Had same question! Apparently no heat at top of wheel. My Hondas and Fords were heated entire wheel. Little disappointed.

For several reasons you should hold the wheel at 9 & 3 o'clock. Not the lest of which is that should the air bag go off you won't be giving yourself a knuckle sandwich. You also have better control of the vehicle. After a while, you get used to it, hand over hand in sharp turns etc. and it soon comes naturely.
