geolander tire pressure

What would be the optimum tire pressure for both front and back tires on a
2003 forester XS with OEM geolander tires?

Stay away from subaru's recommeded pressures - they will wear the tires
unevenly and prematurely.

does having different tire pressure in the front and rear have any effect on
the AWD system?

OK, so what's your answer to the question"?

Good question. I've always followed my owners manual which states 29 front,
28 rear. Intuitively this seems low to me. When I picked up my new 03
Forrester the sales guy even gave me a free tire pressure gauge with 29/28
written on the back. He really wanted to emphasis the importance of tire
pressure. I had to purchase a new tire a couple of weeks ago due to a
sidewall puncture and the Subaru dealership pumped it up to 32. After
other routine dealership maintenance my tires have (on occasion, not
always) come back in the 30-32 range. Seems Subaru doesn't know either...
:)

I have a 2003 Forester X. I've experimented with the recommended tire
pressures and found the driving feel to be sluggish and mpg down slightly.
I have been setting mine at 32. So far that seems to be good for both
handling and mpg, and the tires are wearing well at 27K. If anything, I
would go up a few pounds, definitely not down.

It is said to account for the weight difference between the front and
rear. I don't buy that the weight difference and 4psi is going to change
the rolling circumference enough to effect the awd system. But a larger
difference could cause binding.
I arrive at my tire pressures by trial and error - what feels right.
Usually the rear end settles in at about 305psi lower than the front.
