Why not a Curt, made in the USA, hitch from Amazon. Same 3500/350 towing capacity. Much easier install. Cost$197 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0B9N5FMBQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I guess some people would have the factory OEM tested and certified hitch that is guaranteed to not result in frame damage upon collision. Subuaru sells this hitch for $475 plus taxes from your local dealer. Obviously I do not have the Curt for sale, and no the Curt is not easier to install and in addition hangs approximately 2.5' lower than the OEM, for those people interested in not losing ground clearance. If you are not interested, please keep your comments to yourself.

I thought this forum provided opportunity to comment. No need for your snarky reply. You like the oem hitch. I’ve owned two OB and installed Curt hitches which work for me.

The Curt hitch receiver does sit 2.5” below the rear bumper. The bottom of the receiver is 12” above ground. No loss of the 8.7” OB ground clearance. Also the Curt hitch installs behind the rear bumper beam using the same attach points as the beam but with stronger hardware, whereas the OEM hitch replaces the bumper beam with the hitch horizontal beam. Not sure how this affects a rear collision. If it’s hard enough the frame will likely distort with either setup. I personally Like leaving the OEM bumper beam in place.

How does the receiver height compare between the OEM and the Curt <shown> ? We're thinking of adding a hitch for an Ebike platform style carrier and would like as much ground clearance as possible - for going in & out driveways - the carrier hangs out and can hit.

The OEM hitch receiver bottom mounts flush with the bumper facia whereas the Curt receiver bottom is 2.5 “ below the facia. The OEM hitch provides 2.5” more clearance at the bumper. Based on my measurements, the Curt provides 12 “ of ground clearance. With the OEM you should have around 14.5 inches of clearance.

Thanks. Do they cut into the bumper for the OEM install to achieve this ? ... I'll be looking for Foresters with trailer hitches installed to satisfy my curiosity now.

Yes and they put a trim piece on the cut so it looks finished. I have an OB but I assume that the install on a Forester is similar.

Thanks. Helps to explain the dealer's quote of $ 1230. perhaps ? $ 975. hitch $ 255. wiring ; labour & taxes incl. < Canadian dollars >

Wow! That’s a lot of money for a little clearance increase. I installed Curt 2.5” receiver hitch on my OB with assistance from a friend. Cost about $200. (US) and it took us about an hour. Several helpful videos on the install on YouTube. Purchased from Amazon.
