Bought my Crosstrek limited 26 days ago. Driving mostly easy. Three fillups, only 23 MPG.
Very surprising. I’ve had it up to 80 on the toll road for 3-4 10-15 miles trips, otherwise, nice easy in town driving.
Is this typical for a new car?

1st of all, vary your speed during break-in (first 1000 miles). New cars often have lower than expected mpg's. As the car learns your driving style, and as it ages, the mpg usually increases slightly. But 80 mph and in town driving are real gas guzzling drives. Wait until it's broken in then take it on a highway but don't exceed 75 mph and use cruise control. Also, the less city driving you do, the better. In my situation, I do 90% highway driving, use cruise control most of it and my average mpg is 35. But I've always been light on acceleration (oh, BTW, what's your setting for acceleration? Mine is set at a lower acceleration rather than 'dynamic'. That helps gas mileage also. Do you have 'SI-Drive?' Use the 'intelligent' mode rather than the 'sport' mode.

I don’t know whether I have a sport mode, I’m still learning the car, but I’ll look. I’m also not sure whether I have an acceleration setting, but I’m no speed demon anymore, so I’ll see about that as well.
We’ve taken a few trips on the highway that weren’t very long, and I was cruising at about 70-75. Ive briefly had it to about 90, But was only for a few seconds. I don’t think I’ll ever try any higher speed.
Most of our trips are in the neighborhood where the speed limit is 40 or 45.
I hear you advising me to vary speeds and avoid high speeds for a while. I think I can do that by avoiding the local highways, where everyone is going 70-80, and slower speeds are actually unsafe.
Thank you for your kind reply

That is ridiculously low. I drive my turbo like I stole it and can still get ~20 MPG, and my non turbo towing 1500# and can get ~20mpg, even on mountain roads.

A useful question is if you are using the computer to tell you MPG or if you're calculating it. The computers are usually pretty far off from reality.

Thank you for your comment. I am calculating my mileage with pencil, paper and calculator, I just a few minutes ago had my fourth fill up at 302.9 miles and 10.020 gallons = 30.229 mpg. If I get around that each time, I will be a very happy camper. My driving hasn’t changed any, so I think the low mileage was just the initial break-in period.
BTW, love the phrase,”I drive it like I stole it.” That made me laugh.

I have been very disappointed with the gas mileage of my 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness. I'm typically getting around 23.
The big issue is that I live in Denver at 5280 feet and this vehicle does not have a turbo. Obviously it gets much worse when I drive up into the mountains at 10,000 feet. It really struggles to make power and goes through gas quickly.
My 2024 Porsche Macan S has double the horsepower and double the torque and gets nearly as good gas mileage -- just a few MPG less. If I were a Subaru engineer, I'd be embarrassed...

One of my favorite YouTube channels is “the car care nut“ his reviews are wonderful, and his review of the cross trek with the 2.0 engine complained about how slow the vehicle was. He granted the 2.5 is a little bit more powerful but Although he liked the car overall he did say that it was a perfect thing for a parent to buy for a teenage child because they would never get in trouble with the law ha ha.
The wilderness has the larger engine, is there anything you can do to increase your power?

I'm getting 23-25 mpg in mostly city driving, and up to 29 on the highway in a 2024 Crosstrek Wilderness. With respect to the Sport vs Intelligent modes, I use the Sport for slightly increased acceleration off the line when I need it in the city. It doesn't do much, but it makes the CVT louder:)

Love that channel! Even though he's mostly a Toyota guy (or was), whenever I'm in the mood to get a great review or some advice from an expert, he's my go-to nut!
