FWD fuse on 95 impreza

I just got a 1995 impreza 2.2L. I like it a great deal, but I am
hearing conflicting stories from the original owner and others about
if there should be a fuse in this block and what it does. the fuse
holder is located under the hood and on the passenger side. some say
it stands for four wheel drive and other say it stands for front wheel
drive only. there is talk about gas savings with it in and other
ideas.
any help would be great.

FWD changed it from all wheel drive to front wheel drive.
Used when you have to use your small spare to save the transfer case.

I doubt you'd save much gas -- as the axles & gears would still be turning, just
not getting power.

When you install a fuse into the FWD fuse holder it will instruct the
transmission to power only the front wheels. Gas savings in front wheel
drive mode aren't great enough to warrant giving up your AWD/4WD in my
experiences. I have also heard that even if the fuse holder is present, it
may not be applicable to all models. I've never confirmed that. With the
fuse installed, towing should still be done on a flatbed, why, I'm not
entirely sure, but it's probably safe to *assume* that all of the
"final-drive" (the back end and equivalent of a transfer case in Subaru's
tranny) is not entirely disconnected in FWD mode from the back wheels, and
since the FWD mode is electrically operated, I doubt it influences a
non-powered car anyway.

It's because the axles will turn, but not enough lubrication in teh transmission
will be present (true on AT cars)
