forester 2020 after towed by the city

Hi all, new here. So after being towed by the city from a wrong roadside parking, i noticed a hole next to the gear handle? how does it happen and is it fixable? Thanks!!

The hole is to manually release the shift lock when the vehicle isn't running. It has a little plastic bit the same color as the trim that is normally covering it to keep dirt out and to make it look nice.

They had to release the shifter to put in neutral to tow it.

If you find the piece, it'll fit right back.
If they lost it, you can buy a replacement. Should only be a few bucks.
There's also no harm in it being left open, if you don't care about the look.
