External Auto Tranny Filter on '99 OBW

My tranny has been acting wierd since I got this car three years ago.
At the time, I flushed the fluid which didn't help. I though there was
no external filter, but poking around I see that there sure seems to be
one, right on top of the tranny itself.

It may not help, but I want to replace this filter. Do I need to drain
the fluid first, or can I just swap it out?

Is there anywhere I can get this filter online and shipped fairly
quickly? My nearest dealer is 40 miles away, and I don't know if I can
get there before I start a long trip next Saturday.

On my 2000 Forester 4EAT the transmission filter is on the front side
of the transmission case on the drivers side. Did they change the
location on us? I did NOT need to drain the AT fluid to change my
filter. Ed

No, that's where I found mine too. On some other model I recalles
seeing it up on top of the engine, and since mine isn't there I assumed
I didn't have one. Thanks for the note about draining.

www.subarugenuineparts.com email Jamie and ask her if expedited shipping
would be worth paying for. While you're ordering, think about oil
filters and drain plug washers, air filters and anything else you might
need.

2nd day shipping isn't bad. I'm at $45 for the part with the shipping,
which might be high but is far more convenient than visiting the
dealer. Thanks Carl. That site is bookmarked for future reference.

Heh, she emailed me, turns out I didn't order the spin-on filter. The
one I need is cheaper and I added washers to make up the diff. Good
people at that place, they have a new customer. :)
