Extended Warantee - yes or No and How Much

Should we get an extended warantee for our 04 OBW? I would only consider the
Gold, 6 year/100,000 mile with either $0 or $50 U.S. deductible. How much
should I pay for it? Dealer was asking $1900 when we bought the car. That
seemed kind of high, but I have since looked at what is covered, and it
looks to be more comprehensive than most extended plans. At this point (750
miles and two weeks in) I would say we will probably keep the car until it
drops.

We had the extended on our '99 Camry, and that paid for itself and then some
(we paid about $900 for the plan, and received about $2000 worth of repairs,
but the dealer's service department was very generous with their
descriptions of what was broken when we got near the 100K mark, so about
$1000 worth of stuff got replaced near the end).

Has anyone collected more than they paid? It's a heck of a gamble, but the
LL Bean version has lots of stuff that can break.

I purchased Subaru Gold Plus coverage for 6yr/100k with $0 deductible
from subaruwarranty.com (Subuaru dealer of Chicopee, Massachusetts)
about a year and a half ago (just before my 3/36k bumper to bumper
warranty was to expire) for $1184.

That was a lot less than Subaru of America wanted to offer via their
little flier in the mail, and that was also less than my local dealer
was willing to do.

Don't buy it from teh dealer now unless they'll match the quote you
get from subaruwarranty.com. The "we'll refund your money if you
never make a claim" stuff is a red herring. You're gonna make a
claim. Dealers look to extended warranties as high markup items--I'd
only bite if they offer you a fair and competitive price. The
extended warranty is a good idea, IMO if you plan on keeping the car a
long time.

Obviously, on the average, less money is paid out than taken in - like any
other insurance.
Subaru keeps pushing these things so they must be a high profit item.

i totally agree with frank.

it's peace of mind. if you like the feeling of security, then go for
it. THAT'S what you're buying... chances are you will NOT get back
what you put into it. they're in this to make money.

plus, if you're like me, you like modding your car (which would render
most warrantees null and void) and consequently doing things yourself
(which makes the voided warrantee academic).

Take the money you'd blow on the warranty and
invest it in a mutual fund or something. With a
Scooby, you're likely to come out ahead, and the
money will be there when you need it.

Extended warrenties are waste of money. you'll do the 100,000 miles in less
than 6 years

Secondly, you'll find if something big does break, they'll always have an
excuse and blame you - abuse, not serviced correctly- not serviced enough -
etc =

In Australia, most of the Subies get 5 yr warrenties - thats for a reason I
think, you don't need it.

I have to agree that extended warranties are not worth the expense.
Years ago I got the extended warranty for my 4runner. Nothing broke
that was covered by warranty. During the warranty period (100 000
miles) I had to replace the clutch throw out bearing (did the clutch
anyway) tires and shock. None of this was covered by the warranty.

My other repair were the head gaskets which were covered by a toyota
unwritten warranty. Spent $1500 for nothing.

Subaru's and (Toyotas) are not domestics!
