Exhaust manifold Stripped?

09 Legacy. Went to check the exhaust manifold for leaks and found one of the studs on the drivers side was loose. Pulled the stud and the top 3 threads of the stud came out filled with the thread, or maybe a helix coil insert? Not sure since I got it used.

When I go to put the stud back in the stud starts to tighten but never fully does and when I try to tighten the nut it ends up just backing the stud out before ever reaching torque spec. I assume the threading must be stripped in the head, is that correct? If so how do I make it so I can tighten the manifold enough to prevent leaks?

Replace the stud. You will need a stud extractor to remove it which is about $20 from Autozone

Sorry apprently I wasn't clear. The stud came out just fine. Some of the internal threads from the block came out still wrapped around the stud. And I always replace studs when I pull them out just as precaution.

Have you considered a Helicoil kit for it? You can also possibly upsize the stud slightly and just drill the manifold hole slightly larger

There are tread repair inserts called helicoils. It involves drilling out the hole, retapping and then installing the helicoil insert.
