Can it be determined from the engine number if it is a Phase I or Phase II.

It's likely Phase II but apparently the hardcore crowd is also having trouble
distinguishing between the two:

In any case; to eliminate the slap you'll have to use pistons of a different
design with a longer cylindrical sidewall portion (97 and later pistons are
"skirtless").

Using OEM pistons is not likely to improve this condition permanently, but after
market pistons for the EJ25 are readily available.
