Cv axle issues

I recently purchased a 2003 subaru legacy GT. When trying to replace the CV half shaft I found the correct part don't fit. The trans "5 speed" has been replaced and the CV axles don't fit the spindles. The wheel almost came off on my way home. The inner CV has a male spline. The correct CV has a female spline. I'm guessing I need to change the outer CV joint so it will work correctly and safely. I can not locate a half shaft with the correct inner and outer for this. What year did they change the transmissions to the male inner CV spline
