I have a an Outback that just hit 100,000 miles. I hear an unknown sound like from the front of car. What is the recommended schedule on cv axle replacement?

When they go bad. Frequently, the goo will come out and if you catch is quickly, you can replace just the boots/goo. All axles are remans these days, and most fail pretty quickly.

What kind of sound? Does it change with speed? RPM?

"unknown sound like from the front of car" isn't very much (any) info to go on.

Only when turning the steering wheel of my 2015 Outback full right or full left, did I hear a clicking sound. At 77k miles and according to the dealer, the CV axle had to be replaced.

Was there anything unusual coming through the steering wheel when it slicked? If you could feel it jerk significantly, it is worth looking at the viscous coupling also. this happens when the tires aren't the same size due to over/underinflation or replacing less than four tires with ones of different physical diameter (not the size written on the sidewall).
