Checking TDC without removing harmonic balancer or cover

I have EJ25 2.5l engine. I'm just wondering since you can take off the driver side cover easily, and check the cam mark right there, how do you know if the crank is TDC, without removing the 'regular' cover? I noticed there is an "A" on the balancer, and I'm wondering if I could use that? I looked for a notch, but I don't see one.
