Car won't start or dies .. help!

I have a 91 Legacy. I was on my way to work, and the car died, and wouldn't
start. I had it towed to the shop and they couldn't reproduce the problem.
Got the car back, and one my way to work, the car died, and wouldn't start.
After a 4 mile trip to call a tow truck, I had it towed again ...

The shop tells me that if they bang on the dash, the car will start, but
they said labor on finding the problem could run upwards of a few thousand
dollars.. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on what the problem could
be.

A couple of thousand dollars per hit! Time to find another shop. At the
very least they could check the ECU codes to as least get an idea of where
to look. Try posting at
http://server2.ezboard.com/bultimatesubarumessageboards for a much less
expensive opinion and perhaps a fix. If you're in the Seattle area I could
suggest two shops that don't fix things by banging on the dash!

At the risk of sounding like an instant expert here (which I am not!!) I do know that if a car won't start, some mechanics will bang on the starter, and if it starts after that, it is an indication that the car's starter is on its way to failure and should be replaced soon. Good luck with this!!
