Car died and started whinning noise

2004 Impreza 2.5, 135,000 miles on the clock. The motor stopped at a red light hard to restart. When it did start, a whining noise began. I shut it down, fearing timing belt failure. Go home with a tow strap, remove the timing cover, and the belt looks ok. could the whining be from a worn idler? also, is there a position sensor that has gone bad?

only sound and symptom is whining? not running poorly engine-wise, no shuddering or check engine light? sounds like power steering or alternator or ac compressor seized up and stalled out the engine to me
