I’m new to this forum, but I have owned 4 Subies in my past. All of them were 95-97. 2 Legacy’s and 1 Outback. I am very familiar with the single layer head gaskets Subaru used. I’m currently looking at buying a 2010 Forester XY from someone who bought this car from an auction…. So no history on the car. It has 120,000 miles on it…. So first thing I’m doing is timing belt, water pump, and timing belt tensioner. My question is did Subaru start using the Multi Layer Gasket in 2010?

It’s my understanding that the gaskets were replaced with the new design in 2014, but I’m not certain of that. If you do replace them, I’m told, I hope reliably, that it is imperative to tighten the heads down in the precise sequence. When I did the heads on the 04, I followed this to the letter and have had no problem since.
