Broken Scooby?

Hi,
Hope someone out there can shed a little light on this problem i have with
my scooby impreza turbo 1999.

It all started when i sent the car off to a garage to have some paint work
done. 4 Days and 44 miles and a quater of a tank of fuel later i get the car
back compete with what i thought was crank knock. As soon as the car got to
around 3200 rpm there was a growel.

This has really got worse over the last 3 days and now there is a real heavy
knocking all the time. I have started to strip the car down to see what i
can find out. I just hope someone can point me in the right direction. Is
there a common fault of this kind?. I am pretty keyed up with working on
engines, but i really cant tell if the noise is from the crank or the cams.

I am thinking of taking the task on myself of stripping the engine if need
be, am i taking to much on?.

Thanks in advance

Yes, follow the complain/small claims route first. The engine is quite
simple in design, but getting the pistons out and splitting the crankcase to
get to the crank is a little complicated. If you do tackle it, label
everything as there are quite a number of parts. Even a simple overhaul
without reboring the cylinders is going to easily cost $1000+ (Can). I did a
1990 Legacy motor, and that's what it cost for basic parts (rings, bearings,
gaskets), and some machine shop work for grinding valves and seats, and
checking heads for cracks. Be sure to replace the "O" rings on the crankcase
bolts as these seal the engine internals from the coolant passages.
