brake noise while driving

Hi

I recently bought a used 2002 legacy outback. I love it. There is
one very annoying problem however. when I am driving for an extended
period of time (more than say 20 minutes; the brakes start to squeek,
soimetimes it can get very loud...this only happens when the brakes
are NOT depressed, the second I step on the brakes the noise goes
away.

I have brought the car to the dealer twice, both times they shaved the
rotors and the problem would disappear for a while and come back.

The last time I called the dealer the shop guy told me that they are
metallic brakes and they arte always going to make noise.

Is he full of it? I have never heard a car make such noise ever...if
this is such a common occurance, why is my car the only one I hear

I don't know if the brakes work this way, but on my prior Toyota, there were
springs/clips that mount with the shoes to make sure they are held back from
the rotor. If they are missing, you get the symptoms you decribe. If that
turns out to be the problem, the dealer owes you new rotors.

Yes, most Subarus that I can remember have metal clips that mount between
the caliper bracket and the brake shoes and act as the 'wear surface' that
the pads slide on.

Also, if the clips ARE there, and aren't "centered" properly, one could be
rubbing against the rotor, causing the noise, although I would think that
would be more of a constant noise.

I think full metallic pads are silent! I believe a different compound would
cure the problem...the Ceramix pad that NAPA has is a very good ceramic pad
that I have never heard a noise from. TG
