How the heck do I turn this thing off? I know I have to manually turn it off every time we star our 2020 Forest Premium, but even if we can get it to show the circle with the slash, it still shuts down when we stop and changes back to the green ring. My driving style is to press the throttle halfway through the start-up. It's driving both of us nuts
Scotty.

Does your Forester have the "physical" button as well as the touch-screen "button" ? If so - have you tried both methods of dis-able after starting up ? I've been using the physical dis-able button on my 2024 Base Forester and it works as it should. I also dislike the engine Stop-Start feature and I'm trying to train myself to remember to hit the button upon every start-up. At some point, I may try one of those after-market devices - you can find them with a google search < eg. auto stop eliminator just an example not a recommendation > I'm hesitant to try such a device on a brand new car - in case of any computer glitch - it gets real expensive ..

Just the physical button as far as we know. We're still trying to learn all the ins and outs of the system. They had a person at the dealership who sat with us and explained anything we had questions about. That was very helpful but still. I guess it's just a matter of training myself to hit the start button, then hit the autostop kill button. Where did I put my shock collar, lol. Why didn't Subaru offer a shut-off for that? You would think more people wouldn't like it.
Scotty

We've done what it says in the manual, and it just won't stay off. It always comes back on when we're driving. Maybe I need to talk to the service department. Thanks for that link, Dick. I think that may be the easiest and cheapest solution.
Scotty.

Not after every restart. After starting up. Push the button. The light goes off. Drive around a bit. No Auto Stop. Then suddenly. At a stop light, it shuts down. Hit the accelerator. Turns back on. Try to turn it off again, all I get is the circle with the slash, then the green/orange circle next time I press the button. Then back to the circle with the slash. Nothing that shows it is actually off. I am befuddled.

Disconnect hardware on its way. Gerrrrr. I wonder if I can knock the price off my next car payment.
Scotty.

Nope. And we're not alone. Thank your gubberment for dictating automotive design. Better yet think it the next time you vote and vote accordingly.

I understand your frustration. I felt the same way, but have gotten used to it. Having said that, when I run the air conditioner, I always shut it off because I found the air conditioner doesn't run cold when the "auto-stop" engages.

So if I understand right. It's supposed to keep turning itself back on? I always write in "None of the above is acceptable".

You understand correctly. Everytime you start the car, autostop is on by default. If you want it to stay off you have install something that keeps it off. Unless of course you want it on. In that case autostopeliminator will allow it operate as designed again. In other words it remembers what you want and sets it that way. I had to turn mine back off after a service once when the battery was disconnected but that was expected. I haven't had to intervine since.

I can't wait until it gets here. I'm fumble fingered, so I'll take it into my auto electrical specialist and have it installed.

As Dick Foster pointed out, you can thank overreaching Big Government "oversight" for such frustratingly annoying functions that you can't disable (without wiring in another, costly device). I also urge all auto owners to remember such invasive, ineffectual, ecological over regulation whenever you vote and vote accordingly. I also understand from multiple sources that this feature actually saves less than a thimble full of gasoline on every tank. It is literally meaningless, and only another "feel good" political manipulation.

Yep, I got the eliminator. I actually ordered it before I got my 2024 Subaru Forester last fall (2023) as my son was using it in his '23 Forester.... So I never 'experienced' the inconvenience.... as soon as I drove off the lot and got it home, in went the pigtail (fuse box location). Unclick, click, click, push in cord into fuse box for power, tuck, done. So now the default is 'off'. Still can press the button if I want it 'on' (can't image why I'd want to do that though...) .

I’m not a lawyer, but I think Subaru didn’t offer a permanent shut-off because to do so would violate the federal Clean Air Act. After the election, write to your Congressman/woman.

Someone in another thread mentioned that you can permanently disable it by disconnecting the sensor near the hood latch (under the hood) that tells the computer the hood is closed.

I bought this off Amazon, and I could not be happier. it took me literally 5 minutes to install. Goes behind the on/off button and makes the default OFF. You push the button if you want to turn it on.
