Auto Code Scan Tool?

W

WayneS

Hi all,

What code readers work on Subaru?

I am looking to purchase an auto code reader/scaner. In looking at a lot of
reviews on Amazon, etc. I notice a lot of comments like they don't work on
all Japanese vehicles, namely Subaru's. I have a 2003 Legacy (and a 07 Honda
CR-V) It would be nice to have a reader that works on both.

Looking at something like the Equus 3100 or the Actron CP9175 or anything
else in the $100 +- price range. Any suggestions or oppinions appreciated.

I have bought and used the Innova/EQUUS 3100. It worked fine on my
wife's 03 OBW and I have no reason to suspect it won't work on my 06 WRX
wagon. I think it was $88 and free shipping from Amazon.

Hi,
If you have a laptop computer buy an interface box or kit(you assemble)
then there are many many software you can use. It does lot more than
hand held scan tool. I saved some money using this set up. Dynamically
you can see all sorts of engine parameters while you are driving.

Any OBD-II compliant scanner or code reader will work on any 1996 or later
(and some 95's) US automobile. All will read the codes, some will also read
the data stream coming from the engine ECU. The more expensive models do
a better job of interpreting the data, and may also read the data stream
from the
other control modules in your car, such as the auto transmission, anti-lock
brakes and security.

I have an Actron CP9180 scanner and am very pleased with it. It provides
more data from newer cars than from my 95 Impreza, because new models
provide more info in the data stream. The CP9175 should be adequate if
you don't need to download the data to a computer (I never do).

Quick question Bob I was looking through the laptop plug in interface
(ELM327 USB Code reader Scan CAN Bus OBD2 OBD-II EOBD)ebay 120296199689
which seems like a good idea but they are claiming it works with
win95,98 etc as I recall USB support in the early windows was pretty
awful have you had any experience with it or do I need a better laptop
than my ancient Toshiba with win98.

The listing says it requires Win95 or higher, Pentium 100 or faster.
If your USB port actually works, then it will support this device
with the drivers they provide for Win98.

I got the AutoTap, at about $140. Let's you display dials and graphs
of data vs. time. Version 3.0 doesn't work on my '99 OBW, (it won't
stay connected to the car), but the 2.0 does. Both versions come with
the kit.

It uses your laptop as a display device. USB is an option.

Try this, so far it seems to work with WIN98 and the various items
I've tried it with. Not flash drives formatted with NTFS, of course.

If you have any USB devices already running under WIN98, uninstall
their drivers first before running NUSB32E.

I used an innova 3030a on subaru wrx. It works, but you have to turn on the
ignition, in contrast to the instruction. The UI is not self explanatory.
You do have to read the manual.

If you have USB that works, you are better off getting a J2534 interface
cable (like a Mongoose). They are far more flexible and are supported by
far more software tools.

Any OBDII-compliant scanner should work. It may not be able to read the
manufacturer-specific codes for Subaru, but it should be able to read all of
the generic PCM codes.

I used to use Autotap. I went to J2534. It is faster, not much more
expensive, and can do reflashes if neccessary.
