My new Crosstrek is Alpine Green, and looks just like split pea soup, so I have named her “Soupy” much to the chagrin of my wife.
As I write this, she has 850 miles on her, and after watching many a YouTube video about the horrors of non-maintenance, and the myth of the “lifetime” transmission fluid, I’m here to ask about pros/cons of early fluid change?

The dealership wants to change the oil at 6K, and I’d like to change at about 2k. The dealership is mum on transmission fluid change, but I should do that early too?

We live in Texas, where we expect MAYBE three lousy weather days per winter, so I won’t be thrashing the engine, and my “See how fast this baby will go” days are in the distant past, so I will be a nice sensible driver.
My questions are:
1) should I change fluids early?
2) If so, when?

Well, I spoke to the expert who worked on my Mercedes for ten years, and who swears by his Tacoma pickup.
He said 1000 miles for first oil change, and 12,000 for transmission fluid change, which is basically what I thought myself, and so that’s what I’m gonna do.

Other thoughts are welcome.

Best car I ever owned was a 1989 VW Fox Wagon. I put 205k on it in 6 years, changing the oil religiously every 3000 miles. I expect this little buggy to last at least as long.
