ABS on 95 legacy

Any help with this is greatly appreciated. I know I dont need the ABS
but.......
It all started last winter when I had work done on the right front wheel
(bearing and stearing knuckle replaced) The ABS would engage just stepping
on the brake and putting the car from park to drive . Then it would engage
slowing down on dry pavement. Once and a while the ABS dash light would
come on. Once the car was turned off then restarted, the light would stay
off.
Now it stays on all the time. If it isn't on, simply putting the car in
gear turns the dash light back on. Restarting the vehicle may turn out the
light but only until the car is put in gear. The wheels are not moving when
this occurs. I suspect the right front sensor where the original work was
done but at $150 ($112 online), I wanted to know what you all thought before
I buy the sensor from the dealer.

Is there a way to pull the code that doesn't require a dealer visit?
Autozone says they can only do check engine lights/codes.

There is a way to read the codes from the ABS. It uses the ABS
dashboard light and the green connector with the 2 black pigtails
hanging under the dash in front of the drivers seat.

From the subaru book:

Connector layout, looking from the terminal side (not the wire side)

x x
3 x x 6 where x are the other terminals not related to this

tests.

Procedure:
1. Take out the green diagnostics connector from the side of the
driver's seat heater unit (under the dash board)
2. Ignition switch to off
3. Connect one of the two (either one) black pigtails to diagnosis
connector position 6.
4. Turn ignition on
5. Abs light is in the diagnostic mode and blinks to identify trouble code.
6. After the start code 11 is shown, the trouble codes will be shown in
order of the last information first. The codes will repeat for a max of
5 minutes. If no problem is found, only code 11 will be shown.

After ready trouble code, disconnect black pigtail from position nr. 6
and repeat 3 times within 12 seconds, connecting and disconnecting.

Trouble code list:

Code Indicates

None: Problem in light drive circuit. Light has to come on for 1.5
secs after ignition is on.

Light On: Same as above

11: Start Code
21 FR wheel sensor open circuit or input voltage too high
23 FL
25 RR
27 RL

22 FR wheel sensor when no open circuit or speed signal input
24 FL
26 RR
28 RL

29 Faulty tone wheel
31 FR Faulty solenoid valve circuit in hydraulic unit
33 FL
39 Rear wheels
41 Faulty ABS control module
42 Source voltage is low
51 Faulty valve relay
52 Faulty Hydraulic Motor and or motor relay
54 Faulty Stop Light circuit
56 Wrong control module used or faulty G Sensor

Codes are formed by long ABS light on times (1.2 secs) for the tens and
short on times (0.3 sec) for the units. There is a one second pause
between codes.

Good luck!

John:

I apologize for relying on my memory. I don't have the car anymore but
from the service manual, the color of the connector in question is black.

The green terminals are called the test mode connector and are used for
other tests, not related to the ABS.

There should be a yellow connector which is used for the Subaru select
monitor.

I hope this clarifies it for you.

Good luck

TM
