A/T tranny hesitation

First I thought it was a cold weather thing. But now it's warm and
it's still doing it.
"It" is a long hesitation going from Park or Reverse into Drive. If I
hit the gas it will shift, but with a noticeable jerk (obviously,
since I hit the gas). This can't be good for the drive train. Warm
engine idle as shown on the tach is 600 RPM or less, but it happens
even with a cold idle of 1500 or so.

Nervous question: tranny going south or a simple fix? '99 Outback
wagon with 93K.

Just another nice basic flake.

What if you tried replacing the oil filter in the transmission? (not the
strainer), your car has one, right?

Did you replace the ATF when recommended?

Good luck!

Ok on other gears? Doing it as well from N into D? Happened on my 99 OB
just after I bought it at about 120K Km / 70K miles. orward clutch pack
stuffed. No oil cooler and prev owner probably towed a biggish boat
regularly! Fortunately replaced under used car warranty in Oz. Trustworthy
tranny workshop would be my 1st stop. Cheers

Me, too. Hesitation from Drive #1 to #2 in upstate NY in cold
weather. Happened persistently on two days a week apart. Problem went
away overnight each time. No recurrence now for a month.

Still a mystery.

I have the same car, 99 Outback wagon, and it's done that for a couple
years. If I accelerate firmly it shifts fine, and if the car has a
good load it shifts fine. When the tranny is hot it shifts from 1 to 2
perfectly, or if I kinda idle it from 1 to 2 first thing in the
morning. Does the same in the summer. Looks like I'm not alone.
