99 outback transmission problem

Hi folks,
My 99 subaru outback has a transmission problem. When you put it in
drive it doesn't engage right away. Sometimes takes 20-30 seconds of
stabbbing the accelerator. Dealer says it's got an internal
transmission problem and the trans will soon die. Anyone have any
experience with this?
Thanks!

Well it's all your fault for buying a car with a slushbox on it. Subi
makes some awesome manual transmissions and to purchase the slushbox
model instead is such a shame.

I'd recommend trying a through transmission flush, though it is quite
possible the dealer is correct and those funds would be wasted - there
are plnty of folks whose transmissions were gummed up from improper
mainenance/whatever and a flush fixed it.. Not just a drain & refill, a
true flush. Call around for prices and see what you think. It's a gamble.

Yes:

I just got my 99 Outback out of the shop for the same problem. There is a
piston and a set of seals that wear out. The entire transmission is not
failing. The repair can cost up to $1,600 depending on what other things
they find. Price this at a few dealers. Some are more reputable than
others. My dealer actually came in at $100.00 under the quote. By the way
my Outback has 113,000 miles on it and this was the first major problem with
the car.
