'99 Legacy Outback Limited - what's the ACS switch for?

G

George

About to buy a one of these and while test driving it, I noticed a
button on the moon roof control panel that I believe said 'ACS,' but the
owner didn't know what it was for.

Okay, I had the switch name wrong. But this is on the left hand side of
the power sunroof panel which has 4 buttons: Open, Vent, Close & ASC.
When pressed, the ASC button lights with a red glow but nothing else is
noticeable. The the panel in the owners manual doesn't look the same.
Any ideas what it's for?

My GUESS is it automatically closes the sunroof when the key is tirned
off or the door is closed or locked or security is engaged or something.

Thanks Carl 1 Lucky Texan, I thought so too, but that's not the case. I
tried it again after your suggestion and the only thing I noticed is
that the ASC button stays lit until it's pressed again even if the car
is turned off and then on.

It could be a feature that is broken. Try asking over at www.usmb.net or
dig around at www.cars101.com and see if it was ever a feature/option.

Thanks, I'll try them. Oddly enough, I went to MySubaru.com and with VIN
# and all, in response to essentially the same question, I got "I am not
sure what this 'ASC' switch is for." But he said he would research it
some more and get back to me.

I had a moment to google this yesterday, and some BMWs apparently have
this switch as well. I didn't have time to chase it down. But, I'm
suspicious that it might be related to the transmission shifting
pattern or the airbags. Wild guesses, to be sure.

Yeah, I saw something like that too. The person who sold me the car
mentioned something about the automatic down shifting going down hills
when you hit the brakes, but I haven't been able to tell if that's the
case or not. I was thinking it had to do with the moonroof only because
the button is on that panel and other 3 out of 4 buttons deal with the
moonroof. I'll let folks know if I figure it out ;-)

Hey, I had the same problem. Turned out the moon roof was an after
market installation (it was used and I have no idea what the
manufacturer's name was.) The ASC is an automatic sunroof closing
switch. Normally, when this switch isn't depressed ie. not glowing red
when car is running, the moon roof should automatically close when the
car is turned off. It glows red, I suppose, to remind you that it won't
be closing when you shut off. This allows you to park the car with the
moon roof open or the vent cracked while the motor is off.

Hope this helps ;-)
