'97 Outback Legacy Engine Clunk..thoughts?

A

allsixesandsevens

Hello...

I have a 97 Outback Legacy, 192K miles, automatic tranny.

Yesterday when I started it, the engine was clunking/ticking/rattling
in a non-rhythmic sort of way. It did get cold that night, but not
below 35 (F). I could not determine exactly where the sound was coming
from. This is the first time that the car has produced this sound.
When I drove it, there seeemed to be no loss of power, and I could not
hear the sound from inside the car. Once the car heated up, the sound
got a little quieter, but was still present.

What the heck is causing this?

Many thanks,

Matt

Hard to say from a newsgroup!
But, on the list of possibilties, include a bad timing belt tensioner,
piston slap, lifters, heat shields, crank pulley and maybe engine mounts.

Check the heat shields. Those things rattle like crazy! Sometimes a
pebble gets stuck in one and makes it even worse.
