97 Outback CV joint

Mister B

I think one of my cv joints let go on me. When I turn the wheel hard at
low speeds, it makes a loud clunking sound that I can feel in the
steering wheel. It's similar to, but a lot louder than when a cv joint
in a normal FWD car goes, that's why I'm not sure. Anyone guestimates if
I'm right? Also, would it be safe for me to drive the car 10 miles to
the dealer or have it towed if it is a cv joint?

Thanks,
Bryan

You can check for a torn joint boot (under the car just behind the wheel),
but joints can get noisy even with the boot intact.
Probably ok to drive 10 mi, but do take low speed roads and ease up on the
gas when taking turns. I've seen lots of loose joints, but only 1 that
actually fell apart, and that one from being driven a long time after a
noise had started.
