88 GL Wagon: Has anyone had this problem?

this 88 GL wagon will start and run great for about 10 minutes and
then just die. I hit the key right away and it just turns over for
about 2 minutes and then fires right off like there was never a
problem. This will continue on and on. I’ve checked all the likely
culprits except for the fuel pump. That is my next move. Any other
advice would be greatly appreciated.

I would just like to suggest, if no help arrives here, you also post
this at www.ultimatesubaru.org . Those guys are also good at keeping
older soobs on the road.

I would suggest you check or replace the sending unit in the distributor for
the spark.
There is likely a broken wire in there that is heating and cooling.
I had this happen on one of my earlier cars.
I found it was cheaper to replace the whole distributor with a rebuilt one
than buying a new part.
I doubt it's the fuel pump and you have replaced the gas filters?

You may also want to check for hairline cracks in the distributor
cap...particularly if it
occurs in the rain more frequently. Good luck!

You might have a clogged catalytic converter. It'll run ok untill
backpressure builds up and kills the engine. Let it sit and pressure
goes away and it'll start again and do the same thing over again. You
can try removing the oxygen sensor and running the engine. If it
doesn't conk out with the sensor removed suspect the converter. Had
this problem with Ford Ranger and was big hemorrhoid.
