To increase displacement you'd have to address the bore stroke etc. The easiest way to increase performance is to add forced induction and increase compression if the engine is stout enough and it hasn't been done already, plus you're willing to pay the price for premium fuel from the time it's added.
not the point, 3.6 engines are more readily available in my area. 3.0 engines getting premium pricing. for some reason, 3.6 engines are slightly less expensive.
i am a retired mechanic. as a hobby i buy and repair distressed cars. i have owned 4-5 subarus from loyals to legacys. not familiar w/ez30-36, but believe they are in the same engine family. to answer your question, ez36 @ $800-900, ez30@$1300-$1500. being retired, i am in no rush and can go the long way around to save money. might decide to rebuild, but honestly do not see how to deal with wrist pin in center cylinders.
as an example of engine family, almost any small block chevy v8 will interchange,283, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400 will mount and run with minimal modification.
