Sister's car. 17,800 miles.
Something punctured tread area of a tire. She took to have repaired at Firestone (I know, she likes them or water reason...). Tells me whatever in tire was about 1/4" diameter. Tire removed from wheel and patched. A few days later tire indicator signal, went to place where repaired. Guy tells her he re-repaired but it most likely will leak due to size of penetration and she'll need 4 new tires due to "all-wheel" drive, can't replace just one or two as will ruin the drive system.

Somewhat familiar with all-wheel drive as I used to have an 01 V-70 XC.

I suggested she contact dealer she purchased and has service performed to see if they can clarify, suggest or possibly try repair? She has appointment tomorrow. They have to look at it before they can say anything - makes sense.

Figured I'd see what experiences you all could share.

Thanks,

Joe Mc

Look in the manual. With AWD, the tire circumference has to be in a certain spec across all four tires or you grenade the viscous coupling or similar device.

A properly repaired tire should not leak.

She could get one new tire and have it shaved to the same circumference or buy a used exact same tire with the same tread depth. Ebay will be her friend for a used tire if she goes that route.

with 18,000 miles that tire circumference would not mate well with a new tire, as the last poster said, you'd need to match the existing tires worn down size. not sure who shaves tires, but i have heard of that being done

Thanks, She'll most likely go with whatever dealer recommends. My guess will be 4 new tires are in order.

You can sell the other three on craigslist or similar if they're in good shape, to help offset the cost of the new ones.

Sister just gave update from dealership. They're ordering a (1) new tire and going to have it shaved. Was surprised they're going to shave and didn't try to hard sell her 4 new. Cost for tire, shaving, etc. $400, she was happy about that. Told her come in Saturday for new tire.

Had the same situation with a 2021 Forester with 21k miles. Luckily enough I bought the tire and wheel warranty when we bought the car new. They shaved the new tire, no probl3ms since. no idea of the cost.

I didn't like the ECO tires on mine. My son who drives a lot, hated them for winter driving with his Forester. So when I bought my 2024 Forester (Premium), I drove off the lot and went down and had 'good' all seasons put on it and let the tire dealer keep the brand new ECO tires for posterity.
