On the Outback, you are "supposed to" be able to put your hand near the Subaru emblem to open the hatch. Mine works about half the time. Today while in the car wash, the warm water hitting the emblem managed to do what my hand could not do, open the hatch while in the car wash. As I read the many posts on this Forum, I already know Subaru does not respond to any post, but just putting this information out for others.

Greg, I noticed the same issue when washing the car by hand. The gate also tried to open when I walked behind the car in my garage, almost crashing into the closed garage door. Seemed kind of dangerous, so I disabled that feature (disable switch located below and left of the steering wheel).

It's a shame Subaru has this option on their cars, an option that not only doesn't work, but is dangerous. After years of dealing with Subaru I know they do not listen to their customers . I had a Lemon, they refused to uphold their end of the law, still working on legal remedies. I can not let them get away with ripping me off over $16,000.-

I had the EXACT same thing happen to me. I've also since disabled it. Luckily there was no damage to the tailgate from the garage door.

The disable switch is about as poorly located as one could get it. Wish the switch had a little more 'movement' for on/off.

Our 'hand opening' is very intermittent like some of you others.
