So my mother’s 2018 Crosstrek’s battery died, so the key fob can’t be used to unlock the doors. Trying to use the key in the drivers door lock cylinder isn’t doing anything when trying to unlock it. When Turing the key I don’t feel any resistance as if the lock rod inside the door isn’t connected.

So I’m looking at alternatives on how I can access the vehicle. Can the hood latch be accessed through the grill? Is it possible to hook the latch and pull it manually instead of using the handle under the dash? I can’t get to the handle because of the door lock issue. 🫤. If I could get the hood open then I could jump the car or change the battery so the fob would work again and then look into fixing the door lock.

Per Al Gore's Internet, "Sure, the best approach is to remove all the cladding from the bottom of the engine and the front bumper cover. This will allow you to access the latch using long tools like a screwdriver or prybar. It might be a good idea to have it towed to the dealer, as you may still qualify for roadside assistance."

I am surprised the key in the door lock did not work. Maybe try holding it turned full left? Sometimes even with a dead battery, there might be just enough juice left for the key to activate the mechanism.

If not, I would call the dealer tomorrow morning - Monday - and someone should be able to help. I hope. Maybe an independent shop?

This happens with mechanical car locks of all cars, especially if you only use key fob. You can try WD-40. There are tons of videos on YouTube on how to loosen up the lock.
