2012 subaru legacy wont engage in drive

Hello,
We just purchased a 2012 Subaru legacy. My son drives it mostly and on some occasions it wont engage in drive. Just drifts like it's in Nuetral. Has anyone experienced this problem or heard of it? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you
