Hello Everyone!

I'm new to the forum...glad I found you! My family owns (and has owned) multiple Subaru's over the years. Great cars even with their known issues (head gaskets).

A friend of mine owns a 2012 Legacy Sedan with the 2.5L non-turbo motor along with a CVT tranny. His timing belt tensioner failed, which in turn damaged a piston. I'm searching around for a used motor and was going to do an engine swap for him. I've come to find out that his Legacy is a VIN "B" (sixth digit of VIN) car. I can purchase a used, low mileage engine for it for @ $2600 from a local salvage yard. Comes with a 6 month warranty. This salvage yard also has a couple low mileage VIN "G" engines available, which are @ $1000 less expensive than the VIN B motors. I think the difference in the two types of engines is one has variable valve timing and the other doesn't? Correct me if I'm wrong!

Question- Can I swap in a VIN G motor into the VIN B car or would it involve changing too many other components? Anyone here ever attempted this swap? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
