2008 Outback won't come out of park

Had the car in to correct the problem of the car not shifting out of park. Mechanic replaced the brake pedal switch. This didn't fix the problem. Now they say that it is the center brake light needs to be replaced because it is causing the shift problem.
Could this be correct?
