2002 Subaru Impreza Leak Question

Greta

I purchased the car from a reliable local dealer almost 4 years ago. It had
been a leased car turned in at 30,000+ miles - was not under warranty..
As I do not drive very much, the car now has 48,691 miles on it.
I learned today that it has a "left head gasket leaking coolant".
Is this an unusual problem for its age and mileage?
I suspect the repair will be very expensive - right?
Thank you

It's a known problem. Also, the dealer should have treated the coolant with
the "conditioner" that is supposed to prevent that from happening. If they
don't have records of them doing it when they had the car, they are
definately NOT a "reliable local dealer" but the same type of garbage that
sells used cars that every other dealership is.

Yes, it's going to be expensive.

Thanks for the info. When I complained today to the Subaru dealer the
problem was blamed on cold weather - I live in CT.

That's awful new for a gasket to be leaking.
But, I am new to Subarus; most of my experience is with Toyotas.

I have an '89 GL Coupe that was leaking, and would leak when parked with
the engine off. I used this in full compliance with the manufacturer's
directions

http://www.barsproducts.com/1100.htm

and it hasn't leaked since. It was a bit of a PITA, and took about as long
as doing the job properly, but cost me $14 and two day's time. However, my
car is 20 years old with 134,000 miles on it. However, it's been over a
year and still isn't leaking...knock, knock...

Disclaimer: I also tried it on a '97 Legacy wagon with the leak on the
exhaust side of the gasket...No Go...
