2001 Forester O2 sensor help

The O2 sensor on my Forester has gone bad at 48,000 miles. Since I
don't have the cash for the dealer to replace it I am going to try it
myself. A couple of question though:

Can I get away with a generic replacement like a Universal Walker
sensor part number 250-24000 or should I stick with the expensive OEM
or Bosch part?

What is the best way to get to the sensors?

Any help would be great!

I beleive the O2 sensor is covered by the emissions warantee, which goes to
50 or 60 K. Contact the dealer.

You have a 50k mi powertrain warranty...that being an engine component
as well as an emissions system component, are you sure it's not under
warranty?

Federally mandated 8 year/80k warranty because it's a major
emissions control component.

Subaru had a recall on Foresters about that year. My 2000 Forester had the
front O2 sensor replaced under that recall. Contact www.subaru.com with your
VIN number to check.

It it listed in my warrenty manual as a component still covered by a
California Emissions warrenty. The dealer claimed this did not apply
to me, but I have not had the chance to call Subaru directly (the
dealer told me he spoke with Subaru). I feel like I am getting the
runaround here with this. I mean, why would a part be covered if I
lived in California only?

The link you gave pretty clearly points out that the O2 sensor is only
covered under 2yrs/24K miles.

The 3 items under the 8yr/80K miles are the OBD, ECU and catalytic
converter.

I think he's on the hook for this one.

I had already asked about a possible recall, but that will not help
here. So now I need help with doing the install myself. Where will I
find the front O2 sensor on my car? With that info a friend of mine
who is really good with cars can help to do the install.

My Forester has a front and rear O2 sensor. Pick the correct one to replace.
It is easy on a rack but is doable with a hi lift floor jack. I would not
get a generic but stick with OEM or Bosch. Try AutoZone as I think they sell

Just a follow up: I could not get the old o2 sensor off the car
(after trying for an entire day). It was too rusted on. So I found a
mechanic that would install the part I already had. So I still saved
$125.00 over what the dealer wanted. The car runs great again!

My son replaced an O2 sendor on a '91 Pontiac..
An '00 should be no problem.
ONE: Must be done while HOT
TWO: There is a special tool to grab it with a slot for the wire.
THREE: A 1/2 socket wrench is needed (the bigger ones)
