1993 engine oil leaks

i have a 1993 Subaru legacy L 2wd wagon with 148,000 miles. and it leaks a
lot of oil ....i have to put in at least a quart a week. any one know the
estimate for rebuilding a subie 2.2l engine or is it cheaper to get a used
one that's compatible. i am really close to putting a match to the oil leak
and walk away but it a great car and i want to weigh my options before i
decide to sell it.

Is it leaking oil or burning oil? If it's leaking, you
need new seals, if it's burning, a rebuild.

What about bad valve guide seals? If that's the case, then
it's burning oil and needs new seals.

Good catch. It could be seals, but unless it's
been abused, 148k seems young for rings or seals.

it has been leaking to the point where oil gets on the clutch and i start
slipping..... if it was burning oil i would have junked the car ... anyone
know what an estimate is to have new seals replaced on a 2.2L.
