'02 WRX - weird hissing sound (tranny?)

B

Black WRX

Just replaced clutch on my '02 WRX with Exedy one (OEM, not high-perf).
I'd like to hear if somebody has any idea about this problem. After
replacement, I noticed a strange hissing sound (not too loud, friction
like) when stick shift is positioned in 1st, 3rd or 5th gear, no matter
if clutch pedal is fully pressed or released. As a test, it's enough to
step on clutch and move stick either to 3rd or 5th at about 60mph and
the hissing starts immediately. When stick is back in neutral position,
2nd or 4th gear no hiss can be heard. I didn't notice any problem
shifting, actually with the new clutch everything looks MUCH better and
smoother. When car is stopped, revving can't reproduce this. I'm
definitely bringing car back to service but I'd like to hear if anybody
has idea about this...

It has to be in the gear box itself rather than the clutch, and the motion
that makes it hiss must be coming from the wheels. My only recommendation is
to ensure the gear lube level is up to snuff, then enjoy your WRX!

Thanks, Mike. I'll check the gear lube. Any recommendation on lube
brand/type?

I just put some Redline 75W/90 NS in mine, which is GL5 rated.Stay away from
this. Shifting is smoother, but going into first is worse then before. Have
to be almost stoped .. before i could go in around 5mph. But i have no idea
what was in it before, i want to switch back ! My car still has a warrenty
so i dont want to use anything thats not supposed to be in there.
